Zakynthos is the southernmost and third in size island of the Ionian islands and belongs to the Eptanesian complex of islands. Its size is 406 square kilometres, but absent from the port of Kyllini in the Peloponnese just 9.5 nautical miles.
The shape of Zakynthos is an irregular triangular with the northernmost side of the island going to the Cape Schinari and the southeastern part going to the Gulf of Laganas which is formed between two capes, the one of Marathias in the West and the other of Gerakas in the East.
Inside the Gulf of Laganas there are two islands, Marathonisi and Pelouzo, while 37 nautical miles south of Laganas one can find the Strofades islands. Laganas Bay follows the restrictions of the Marine Park of Zakynthos and is a protected place as the Caretta-Caretta turtle has chosen it to lay its eggs.
The west coasts of the island have got a length of 34 km, are rocky and steep forming many caves and creeks. Unlikely the east coasts of Zante are opposite Peloponnese and have got a length of 37 km and consist of beautiful sandy beaches.
The climate of Zakynthos is a mild Mediterranean one with many rainfalls from November until January and great sunshine all year round. Zante have always been rich in vegetation and is a unique place with rich agricultural production based mainly in the cultivation of olives, raisins and citrus fruits as long as flowers.
